Remember I posted a gallery from Finland Helsinki?
Well this is the same “round trip” and the next place we are visiting is Vyborg city in Russia! I was so excited to see it. I didn't even know how interesting and exotic it would be for me, even though I am russian myself but most of my life I lived in Latvia so that does make sense why I felt in Russia this way.
Some call Vyborg a Scandinavia with a Russian soul and I totally agree with this statement.
4 must see places in Vyborg!
(Also check these photos/ places in my gallery.)
Vyborg Castle and museum
It is also a symbol of the city. This castle is more than a 700-year-old fortress which is a massive St. Olaf’s Tower and stone buildings. Inside the fortress there’s a historical museum. And if you‘re looking for panoramic views, climb to the top of the Tower and you will discover a beautiful picture of this city - 360° panorama.
Market Square and the Round Tower
Market Square is a must see because this truly makes the atmosphere of Vyborg. From early morning, sellers offer tourists local souvenirs: copper tableware, linen bags with the prints of local sights, local honey, hot tea and local special drink “Sbiten” (Russian: сбитень, ) is a hot winter Russian traditional drinkб made of honey and different spices.. Also try soaked apples - it is like pickled apples kinda like pickles but apples. Also make sure to try local Mead drink, it is truly special and very tasty. So def go to the roofed Market Hall if you need to buy some food and try local traditional things.
Vyborg Rathaus
The town hall is smart, resembles buildings in small towns in Europe. It is visible immediately to the left at the entrance to the old district of the city. At the time there was repair work going on.
You will see The Statue of Torkel Knutsson is right in front of Rathaus. Mr Torkkel Knutsson who founded the city of Vyborg. Great place to photograph the fortress / castle too.
“Viking Hotel” in Vyborg
This hotel is comfy because it is located very close to the Old Town, about a 5 min walk.
I did enjoy the interior of the hotel and also the food was nice. So I would recommend you to stop here and check the area out.
Also I think it is best to visit Vyborg in summertime because in early spring when it is not so green yet and pretty cold, also very windy. In such conditions you will not fully enjoy the magic of this city.
Advice! Make sure to visit Vyborg in the end of spring or summer months and then it will be a perfect journey and beautiful experience. Even though I froze, I still managed to enjoy this unusual, exciting city.
