Sierra Nevada Ski Station

One of my dreams came true in december 2018!

I always wanted to learn to skiing and never knew when I will have a good opportunity and timing for this. My family had a great idea to go to Sierra Nevada for Christmas time. I didn't think long and agree right away. So we went there!

Me and my family did stop in hotel Telecabina. This is a pretty nice hotel and great location. Perfect positioned at the main square very close to the cabin lifts, restaurants etc. Clean and tidy room. Personnel is very welcoming, service minded and helpful. The breakfast included pretty much most of what we wanted. Ski-lockers free of charge. Car parking available in the “general” garage, with direct entrance to the hotel, though at a price of 17 – 21€/24h. The “2-star” grading is in our opinion too low. We will most likely return.

Important to notice:

The Sierra Nevada Ski Station is a ski resort in the Sierra Nevada in the province of Granada in southeastern Spain. The ski area is on the northwestern slopes of Veleta, the third highest peak in peninsular Spain and the most southerly ski resort of Europe.

Skiing in the mountains

Sierra Nevada is great if you are very new to skiing and even if you never tried it before. There are areas for kids and also for professional level skiing people. This was completely new adventure for me so at first ofcourse I didn't really understand how all works, that made me follow every step what I have been taught. It is better when you have everything with you so you don't need to rent or buy. If you planning to buy anything in resort then you have to be ready for prices 3 times higher than normal, good that I had to buy only gloves and the rest - boots with skis I had to rent, this did cost about 60 EUR for 3 days.

Next was going up in cabin lifts to the mountain itself. Before you have to put boots on (boots are really heavy - about 2kg one) and walk till the cabin lifts and of course you carrying your skis with you. Once you are up you walk outside right to the mountain and that's where you put your skis on.

For first day

I had to take an instructor because it was my very first time and I would have zero clue how to ski. Instructor was amazing, she did explain all perfectly (even we asked her to talk spanish still wasn't a problem to understand).

My first hour was funny because I felt like frozen crab on mountain at last that is what I thought but my instructor said I am doing amazing because I was quite relaxed which is very important for skiing. Anyways after 2 hours my instructor was ready to leave and I was already skiing, it was slow and not so fast but I did it without falling.

On 1st day I spent about 6 or 7 hours on mountain, all day I ski with no sticks just to concentrate on my legs because that is the main thing, skiing is all about legs and controlling them. I learned and in the end of the day and I was flying all around the Green line.

When my younger bro saw that I am doing so well decided to offer to go on the Blue line (which is also leading right home without taking funicular), he said it will be fine because it is almost same as Green line. I did listen to him and we went. What can I say after 2 downhills of falling pretty much on every step, I decided that I will not go ferder anymore plus it was end of the day and I was freaking tired already and also not as skilled for the Blue line. We did call one of evacuation Snow Bikes which are driving all around there and one of those took me down. Great that I decided to do so because later I saw even more difficult downhills which ones would be hard to manage for someone as “green” as me with 1 day experience. Snow Bikes are actually damn cool, now i would like to ride one myself.

Second day

I woke up looking as a hamster because apparently in mountains it’s normal to end up looking like that after a sleep. You can take a look on my face on the picture I’m around the breakfast table, I look like bees was biting my face lol. Also we been festing some with a family on a previous evening which wasn’t helping my hamster looks either. Well, I got all myself together still, did dress up and went back to the white white mountain. After failing on previous day at the blue mountain I felt a little unsure about my skiing skills but after 3-4 times I was OK again and more sure.

Second day I did spend mostly practicing on green lines and trying more difficult green lines because there is about 3 types. Day was great without any accidents, we had a food break up on same mountain and later again did ski till the end of the day, sure was tired in the end but had to celebrate Christmas still. We was ordering Christmas meal in the same hotel -Telecabina and meal was pretty great. It was nice evening but we didn't stay up too long because had to come back on the mountain net day again.

Third day

Somehow I had a good sleep and felt amazing! Other night was really bad because I could not sleep maybe because I never been sleeping in mountains like this before and it felt really different.

Anyways, I was ready for skiing as never before! And I did amazing after 2-3 times on Green line I was ready to go to the Blue line and this time I was sure It will be totally fine. And what do you think? I did fall only one time because was going too fast and this is it.

Later I went on a higher one -Blue line and did practice there all day. Legs was burning every time, took a lot of energy because Blue lines are also much longer and difficult then the Green lines but it was fun.

Remember the Blue Line I did talk about on a first day? On this 3rd day I decided I can go and DO IT and this time come home without using funicular or Snow Bike like previous time. So I ate a chocolate because after all day skiing I had not so much power and after I was ready to go down. This Blue line is most difficult from the other ones on the mountain,as this one goes down to the city (right to my hotel) and due to that it is much more longer and more difficult. Was a little challenge as I had to break my psychological barrier because of previous time falling here.I still wasn't scared which was a good thing. This time few times I also did fall because mountain is not a simple one but did come down with no problems and feeling proud of what I have done and done it right !

In the end

I loved this experience as you noticed! But also I did everything very wise without going crazy. This definitely did teach me new skills and gave me more food for brains. Proved once again that patience and hard work can give us great skills and in the end make really happy for accomplishing something what seemed impossible at the beginning.

I also have to say, if you are planning to do something then of course be sure that you like doing it and also make sure that you are capable of doing it. Most important to be safe and enjoy without spending it later in hospital or worse. I say that because I saw a lot of people getting traumas on the mountain because of not being careful. As I also did read traumas is a one thing but people even die a lot because was not careful skiing. So always be careful and responsible of what you do, sometimes risks are not worth it.

Sorry with such kinda ending but just had to say that. Anyways It was amazing and Sierra Nevada itself is worth to visit because really beautiful and Christmas mood in december there is guarantee. I loved every minute there and hope you enjoy my pictures, I am definitely coming back again!
