Ficus Microcarpa – Alicante big trees park

One of most interesting places in Alicante I find this Ficus trees park. An amazing fact about this trees: when Ficus trees grow big and branches become really heavy the tree start to take roots from branches down to the ground to provide support for them(take a look on my photos). These trees are looking really unusual and I never saw anything like that before.

This trees are a city heritage and one of the fundamental values of city. These ficus belong to a series of trees approximately one hundred years old which are just amazing for their leisure and environmental value. You can meet those in several areas of Alicante city.

Common name: Indian laurel.
It comes from: South and Southeast Asia to Australia.
Ficus: old name of the fig tree. Microcarpa means “small fruit”

An evergreen tree of great development with a dense crown. Its trunk is thick and usually branched at low altitudes. Its abundant branching makes it excellent shade tree for walks ad landscaped areas. The species has small oval-shaped leaves of intense green colour and fruits similar to the figs of a green-yellowish tonality that turn purple when ripen.

The city has 13 specimens of Ficus Microcarpa listed in the Catalogue of Monumental Trees of Local Interest. Parque de Canalejas is the area where this species has more presence, with ruine trees between 50 and 100 years old. Cups up to 30 meters in diameter, heights of between 13 and 20 meters and aerial roots on the longest, are the characteristics that stand out in this variety of ficus.
