Easter!

Easter is a wonderful holiday, rich in tradition. It is celebrated solemnly and joyfully by both religious and nonreligious Russians.

The one that precedes the festival is called the Bright Easter Week or the Passion Week, which has a Bright Day every day since Monday. The Russian people are preparing for the celebration in advance, enduring many days of Lent, decorate houses and yards, and bring perfect purity everywhere and in everything.

But the most active people begin to prepare for the Resurrection of Christ from Pure (Bright) Thursday. Religious supposed to get up at dawn in order to be redeemed without fail and thus to be cleansed from all sins that had accumulated during the whole year. And only after that visit the temple, where it was necessary to confess and take communion. After the church, they quickly went home to put the final touches in an exemplary manner, before painting eggs and baking Easter cakes.

In the evening of bright Saturday, all the Christians dressed smartly, with Easter cakes, Easter eggs, went to the temples for the solemn Vigil. Before the onset of midnight, the bells were ringing, announcing the approaching moment of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Under the unceasing bell chimes, the procession began around the cathedrals.

And the "game of heaps" was entertainment only for girls. Poured out more than two heaps of sand for every player. The young ladies who were not participating in the contest at all did put the painted egg directly under the on of the heaps of sand. The playing participants came up and showed one of the heaps.
