Svartisen ‘2012

This is one episode (destination point) from my round trip in Norway, it was august 2012. We were 9 people traveling in a van and stopind at destination spots we planned before. On our round trip in Norway we also visited Svartisen which I want to show you and will be talking about it today.

To get to Svartien first you need to drive here, park your car right there at the local parking and then you need to take a boat to the glacier side. Boat tickets you can buy on boat itself or at the tourist information. Tickets will be valid for one use and does not matter which day you are using them. To get to the glacer side it takes 20 min, then you need to walk 3 km to glacier itself.

10 things about Svartisen

  • Svartisen is quite known attraction in Norway, it seems like people love visiting it.
  • The glacier has changed and shrunk considerably the last 50 years, mainly due to climate changes.
  • In next 50 years this glacier might not be there anymore because it is still melting and shrinking.
  • Svartisen is a collective term for two glaciers located in Nordland county in northern Norway.
  • Svartisen is Norway’s second largest glacier and covers fully 369 square kilometres.
The most famous Glaciers in the Arctic Circle is Okstindan and Svartisen.
  • In winter it can fall more than 10 meters of snow in the Arctic Circle area of Norway.
  • The name Svartisen comes from the old Norwegian word "svartis", which denotes the deep blue color of the ice, and the contrast of the white snow and newer ice on the ice plateau.
  • lf and better to wear some comfy shoes.
  • It is a beautiful place to hike at and don't forget your camera because you will want to take some beautiful photos.
  • You can explore Svartisen on several glacier hikes, but it is recommended to always book through a certified provider with professional guides. Hiking on the glacier on your own is very dangerous and not recommended. (we didn't book one though)
